Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) Public and Media Officer Maria David, a Senior Correctional Officer, recently discussed the expectations for this year’s harvest from their Divundu Farm during an interview with Eagle FM.
She revealed that they anticipate a yield of about 1,200 tons of maize, from all the seven centre-pivots planted this year.
The Divundu Farm spans 366.8 hectares.
Speaking on the purpose of establishing farms, David explained that the vision is to contribute to food security and provide inmates with agricultural skills to start their own farms upon release.
“Not every offender works on the farm; some are on various programs that are offered at our various facilities. Every offender willing to undergo a rehabilitation program is given a chance. We evaluate individuals to determine who is suitable for working on the farm without the risk of escaping,” she stated.
Regarding the distribution of their harvest, she mentioned that they supply food to the 14 correctional facilities, local police stations, schools, and even sell to businesses during various trade exhibitions.
In addition to maize, the NCS has also harvested about 626.8 tons in this financial year from their Divundu Farm.
David noted that the rainfall this year has been beneficial, and as a result, their crops appear promising.
