IUM, A Community University: Thinking About Where to Study in 2026? IUM is the Answer!

By: Stephanus Pombili

Choosing where to study is one of the most important decisions a young person or working professional will ever make. It is a decision that shapes careers, influences opportunities, and determines how prepared one will be to contribute meaningfully to society.

In Namibia’s higher education landscape, one institution consistently stands out for its resilience, growth, impact, and relevance to national development: the International University of Management (IUM).

IUM’s story is one of vision, courage, and determination. From humble beginnings in 1994, starting in a kitchen with a single student, the institution has grown into a formidable force within Namibia’s higher education fraternity. Today, it is almost impossible to speak about top universities in the country without mentioning IUM. Whether the conversation is about state-of-the-art infrastructure, quality of education, modern laboratory equipment, or research capacity, IUM continues to set the standard. For many aspiring students, IUM is not just an option; it is the answer.

Over the years, IUM has been one of the fastest-growing private universities in Namibia and has extended its footprint beyond the country’s borders. With more than 25,000 students currently enrolled across its campuses, IUM boasts one of the largest student populations in Namibia. Its alumni base, now exceeding 30,000 graduates, is a testament to the institution’s sustained output and relevance. These graduates are not merely degree holders; they are professionals who are actively shaping the nation’s future.

IUM alumni can be found across all sectors of the Namibian economy. Recent independent research and assessments reveal that the majority of IUM graduates are gainfully employed in various institutions, both public and private. They serve as managers, lawmakers, teachers, human resource practitioners, finance managers, administrative officers, risk control and compliance officers, school principals, lecturers, and academic staff. Through their daily work, they contribute directly to governance, service delivery, education, and economic growth, reinforcing IUM’s reputation as a university that produces employable and impactful graduates.

Beyond teaching and learning, IUM has positioned itself as a true community institution, one that understands its responsibility to give back. A notable example of this commitment is IUM’s recent support to the Ministry of Health. The university donated health equipment valued at N$5.8 million and went further by offering the expertise of its professors to assist with knowledge transfer to ministry officials.

This initiative, projected to add value exceeding N$25 million over the next five years, underscores why IUM is widely regarded as one of the best private universities in Namibia, a non-profit institution, yet invests in people, systems, and national capacity. Through initiatives such as the Namwandi Family Trust, IUM continues to uplift communities and support government efforts in tangible ways.

One of IUM’s most admirable qualities is its inclusive approach to education. Understanding that academic journeys are not always linear.

IUM offers the IUM Tutorial Centre for students who may not have passed Grade 11 or Grade 12 as required.

This centre provides an opportunity to improve subject results across a wide range of subjects, enabling learners to strengthen their academic foundation and confidently begin their tertiary education journey. This initiative reflects IUM’s firm belief that potential should never be wasted and that success can be nurtured with the right support.

IUM’s academic offerings are carefully aligned with labour market demands. The university continuously develops and tailors programmes that respond to the evolving needs of the economy, ensuring that graduates are not only qualified but also relevant. This market-driven approach to education has played a significant role in the high employability of IUM alumni.

In terms of infrastructure, IUM has invested heavily in creating modern, conducive learning environments. The university operates state-of-the-art campuses in Ohangwena, Kavango West, Khomas, Ongwediva, and Erongo, as well as a dedicated research centre. These campuses are equipped to support teaching, learning, innovation, and research, further cementing IUM’s role as a key contributor to Namibia’s development agenda.

Access to IUM is straightforward and inclusive. All that is required is a Grade 11 or Grade 12 qualification with a minimum of 25 points in five subjects. Students admitted to IUM are eligible for funding from the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF). Importantly, mature-age entry is also available and funded by NSFAF, opening doors for working adults and those who wish to return to education later in life. With campuses located across the country, IUM is truly at your doorstep.

Today, IUM invites prospective students to join a vibrant academic community of more than 25,000 students and become part of a powerful network of over 30,000 alumni. It is a university that has grown from modest beginnings into a national asset, a university dedicated to empowering people, transforming lives, and securing Namibia’s future.

If you are thinking about where to study, think impact, think opportunity, think IUM. A university dedicated to its people’s future.
