Meet Adelheid Amadhila, a young and ambitious second-year Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery Science student at Welwitchia University (WU). Originally from Outapi in the Omusati Region, Adelheid is not only committed to her academic journey but is also actively involved in student leadership, giving her a unique perspective on university life, academic development and student representation.
For Adelheid, choosing Welwitchia University was motivated by her passion for Nursing and Midwifery and the university’s strong focus on health sciences and practical learning. She understands that nursing is a profession that demands much more than theoretical knowledge. It requires practical competence, professionalism, effective communication and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
“Coming to university meant stepping outside of my comfort zone, meeting people from different backgrounds and preparing myself for a career where I will eventually be responsible for the wellbeing of other people,” she explains.
Her experience at Welwitchia University has been a combination of exciting moments, challenges, learning and personal growth. Like many university students, she has discovered that higher education requires greater responsibility, discipline and effective time management. Unlike high school, students must take greater ownership of their academic progress.
As a nursing student, her education extends beyond the classroom. Clinical placements have provided opportunities to interact with patients and healthcare professionals, enabling her to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life healthcare situations. These experiences have strengthened her understanding of the responsibilities that come with becoming a healthcare professional.
Adelheid is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery Science Level 8 at Welwitchia University. She describes her experience with teaching and lecturer support as generally positive, particularly because nursing education requires students to understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of healthcare.
According to her, lecturers contribute professional knowledge and experience to the learning environment, making complex concepts easier to understand. She also appreciates the academic standards that encourage students to take their studies seriously.
“Nursing is a profession where you cannot afford to simply memorise information and forget it after an examination. You need to understand what you are learning because eventually you will apply that knowledge when caring for real patients,” she says.
One of the aspects Adelheid values most about university life is its diversity. Studying alongside people from different cultural backgrounds has taught her to appreciate different perspectives, communication styles and experiences. Rather than viewing diversity as a barrier, she sees it as an opportunity to learn from others.
She believes this experience is particularly important for future healthcare professionals, who will work with patients from different cultures, communities and backgrounds. Learning to communicate respectfully and work effectively with diverse people is therefore an important part of preparing for professional life.
Her message to prospective students considering Welwitchia University is simple: come with an open mind and be prepared to work hard. University will not always be easy, but the challenges can contribute significantly to personal growth.
She encourages students to ask questions, build positive relationships with lecturers and classmates, participate in student activities and take advantage of opportunities beyond the classroom. Most importantly, she advises students to take ownership of their education.
“Do not be afraid to start the journey,” Adelheid says. University, she believes, is not merely about obtaining a qualification; it is also about discovering yourself, developing resilience, meeting people and preparing for the person you aspire to become.
