- We’d love to start by hearing about who Sofia Ndjamba is and what your academic journey has been to date.
“I am a proud 2026 graduate with a diploma in Library and Information Science from the University of Namibia. I’m a conqueror and a go-getter. I have a supportive family and friend structure, with encouraging mentors and lecturers, which is the best thing that ever happened to me.
Lastly, God has done it for me, as always, and I’m forever grateful. My academic journey has been one of determination, growth, and perseverance. Despite challenges along the way, I remained focused on my goals and worked hard to achieve this milestone.”
- So, how did you come about applying and doing a Diploma in Library and Information Sciences?
“First of all, I love anything that has to do with ICT. Secondly, when I was improving my points at Jetu Jama Namcol Centre, I used to go to the library and study for hours or even the whole day.
While spending time at the library, I was observing what the librarian does, and that’s how I fell in love with the work, and I could see that it’s mostly associated with ICT. When I passed grade 12, I was excited and confused to choose what I wanted to study at UNAM. So, I asked my mentor from the Tulonga Foundation, Ms. Hilya Ndeshihafela Mwatiledu, to help me choose a program, something that is suitable for my condition or for persons with a disability.
She then identified 3 courses for me, which were Records and Archives; Library and Information Science; and Law. I chose Library and Information Science because I have always valued education, information sharing, and helping others access knowledge.
I was drawn to the idea of being part of a system that empowers people through information, whether in schools, communities, or digital spaces. I was already interested in anything related to ICT, so I applied in 2022 and got accepted. I believed this field would allow me to make a positive contribution in education and information services while also growing professionally.”
- How did you celebrate your milestone?
“I celebrated my milestone with gratitude and joy together with my family, friends, and loved ones. It was a proud and emotional moment because it reflected the hard work, sacrifices, and support that helped me reach this achievement.”
- What have you learned about yourself through achieving your diploma?
“I learned that I am resilient, hardworking, and capable of overcoming obstacles. I also discovered the importance of patience, self-belief, and staying committed to my dreams no matter the circumstances.”
- What is your advice for maintaining a positive attitude in tough times?
“My advice is to stay hopeful, believe in yourself, and never give up. Challenges are part of life, but with determination, prayer, support from loved ones, and a positive mindset, it is possible to overcome them.”
- What networking opportunities has your diploma program from UNAM provided?
“It has provided me with valuable networking opportunities through interactions with lecturers, students, professionals, and workplace experiences. These connections helped me gain knowledge, confidence, and exposure to the professional world.”
- If your graduation cap could talk, what would it say about your diploma journey?
“It would say: This journey was not easy, but every challenge was worth it. Keep believing, keep pushing forward, and never stop reaching for your dreams.”
- If you could instantly master any skill for your career, what would it be?
“It would be advanced information and digital technology skills. This would help me grow professionally and contribute more effectively to modern library and information services.”
- You’re now working at UNAM. Which other top 3 companies/entities would you love to work for/at?
“Besides working at UNAM, I would also love to work for organisations such as the National Library of Namibia; Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture; United Nations and international organisations that focus on education, information management, and community development.”
- If you could give your younger self one piece of advice before starting your diploma achievement at UNAM, what would it be?
“It would be: Believe in yourself, stay focused, never let people’s negative comments affect you, and never let challenges define your future. Your hard work and determination will pay off.”
