The International University of Management (IUM) stands today not merely as an academic institution, but as a monumental symbol of vision, resilience, and transformative leadership.
At the heart of this success story lies a name that deserves perpetual reverence: Honourable Professor David Richard Namwandi, a man whose humble beginnings in the modest village of Okapya never constrained his global aspirations.
Prof. Namwandi, affectionately known as “Ndaafita” in the Oshiwambo language, is a seasoned academic and managerial expert with qualifications earned from prestigious institutions across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
His extensive expertise in management is not only the bedrock of IUM’s administrative excellence but also a key reason why the university has risen to such remarkable heights.
Under his leadership, IUM has been acknowledged as one of Namibia’s premier universities and continues to gain recognition across the African continent and the globe.
IUM’s exponential growth and credibility are underscored by its impressive academic rankings. According to Eubank University Rankings, IUM is ranked 3rd in Namibia, and 487th in Africa, an extraordinary feat for a university that began with a single student.
Additionally, Times Higher Education has listed IUM among the world’s promising emerging universities. These accolades are not accidental; they are the culmination of tireless work, vision, and unparalleled leadership.
From a modest start in 1994 with just one student, IUM now boasts a student population of over 25,000 students, making it one of the largest tertiary institutions in the country.
This rapid growth is a testament to the university’s commitment to accessible, inclusive, and quality higher education.
Education, when properly dispensed, is a tool for both personal and national transformation. At IUM, philosophy transcends the boundaries of the classroom. The university’s mission is not limited to awarding degrees but is intricately tied to shaping graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to Namibia’s development.
Just last week, IUM held a grand winter convocation, graduating 2,500 students.
Since its inception, the institution has produced over 36,500 graduates’ individuals who are now spread across sectors including education, business, health, information technology, and public administration.
These graduates are not just filling positions, they are creating jobs, starting businesses, and leading change within their communities.
One of the most groundbreaking initiatives spearheaded by Professor Namwandi is the provision of a N$3 million entrepreneurship fund dedicated solely to IUM graduates.
This fund is intended to facilitate the creation of new businesses, encouraging self-employment and economic empowerment.
In contrast to many institutions that simply release graduates into a saturated job market, IUM is investing in their futures by supporting them financially, technically, and academically to build enterprises that uplift the nation.
This initiative is unprecedented in Namibia and stands as a beacon of what higher education can achieve when visionary leadership is aligned with national interest. IUM is not just graduating students it is sculpting job creators, policy influencers, and thought leaders.
Another distinctive strength of IUM is its expansive network of international partnerships and collaborations. These affiliations are not merely symbolic; they represent deep, purposeful engagements aimed at elevating the quality of education and research.
IUM works hand in hand with organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Engage Innovation Hub Namibia, and several global universities, including institutions in Russia, China, and South Africa. These partnerships facilitate cutting-edge research in areas like data science, public health, HIV/AIDS awareness, and digital innovation.
This global outlook enhances the quality of IUM’s curriculum, ensures exposure for its students, and maintains the university’s relevance in a rapidly changing academic and economic environment.
IUM’s physical infrastructure mirrors its academic ambition. With state-of-the-art lecture halls, digital learning platforms, and well-equipped libraries, the university provides a conducive environment for both academic and personal growth. A 2019 assessment of higher learning institutions in Namibia noted that IUM leads in infrastructure quality, academic equipment, and innovative teaching methods.
The university’s symbolic identity is further reinforced by elements like its iconic graduation gown, admired for its elegance and symbolism.
As one student leader, Comrade Cornelia Michael, once remarked, “IUM is the best university with the most beautiful graduation gown” a light-hearted yet heartfelt testament to the pride and dignity associated with being an IUM graduate.
The spirit of IUM is best encapsulated in the philosophy of its founder. Professor Namawanda’s story is one of perseverance, determination, and relentless pursuit of excellence. His life demonstrates that greatness is not bestowed, it is cultivated through hard work, vision, and a passion to serve others.
In Oshiwambo, we say “Moshikola Mwa Dja Oxupa”, meaning “a great tree grows from a small seed.
This proverb is the perfect metaphor for IUM’s journey. From its humble roots to its current position as an academic powerhouse, IUM exemplifies what can be achieved when leadership is grounded in community values, strategic foresight, and an unshakable belief in the potential of the Namibian child.
Today, IUM is not only an educational institution; it is a movement, a driving force in national development, youth empowerment, and socioeconomic transformation.
The Future is IUM
The International University of Management continues to chart new territories in education, research, innovation, and nation-building. Every year, thousands of young Namibians and students from the Southern African region choose IUM because it offers more than just a degree. It offers a promise, a promise of a future grounded in knowledge, responsibility, and opportunity.
As Namibia strives to meet its development goals and create a knowledge-based economy, institutions like IUM become ever more essential. They provide the human capital, thought leadership, and entrepreneurial energy needed to drive national transformation.
The story of IUM is far from over. In fact, it is only the beginning. As it continues to evolve and expand, one thing remains certain: IUM is an institution wholly dedicated to the future of its people.
Let us salute Professor David Richard Namwandi, whose vision has redefined what is possible. Let us celebrate the achievements of IUM’s alumni who are making tangible impacts across sectors. And most importantly, let us encourage every young Namibian to look toward IUM not just as a university, but as a launchpad for their dreams.
