Namibia’s first inaugural commemorative public holiday of the 1904 to 1908 Herero/Nama Genocide took place on Wednesday, 28 May 2025 in Windhoek.
The event was attended by foreign mission diplomats and various political, traditional, and national leaders.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Vice-President Lucia Witbooi were the guests of honour at this prominent event.
The first ever commemoration of the genocide that was led by German Colonial forces under the military leadership of the colonial administrator, Theodor Leutwein and Lothar von Trotha, took place on Wednesday with large public participation.
The day was introduced by an announcement made by the former speaker of the National Assembly, Peter Katjavivi, on 28 May 2024.
The announcement highlighted the start of the broader national discourse that aims to bring more focus on the impacts that this particular event had on Namibian history.
On the next page are some of the pictures of the Namibians from the predominantly impacted groups of the Nama and Herero communities from across the country who attended the first commemorative day activities and program at the Parliament Gardens in Windhoek.
