Treat Film and Creative Sectors as a Strategic Priority

During the premiere of Wrong Generation at local cinemas (Ster-Kinekor Grove Mall and Maerua Mall) last week, the Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Wenzel Kavaka, called for the film and creative sector to be treated as a strategic priority, not a side project.

Kavaka said the short, locally-produced film’s production served as a landmark for independent filmmaking in Namibia.

“It shows that we have the talent, the stories and the technical expertise to produce work that is both deeply local and globally relevant. But it also reminds us of a hard truth: talent and commitment are not enough on their own,” he remarked.

He noted that the film and creative sectors need sustained, structured and predictable investment if they are to thrive.

Kavaka indicated that the government, and specifically within the information and communication technology portfolio, has recognised that film is not only culture; it is also an industry, one that can create jobs, build skills and contribute to economic diversification.

“We must therefore treat this sector as a strategic priority, not a side project,” said Kavaka.

He added that they will work more closely with institutions such as the Namibia Film Commission, to regional and international funders, and private sector sponsors, to expand funding mechanisms.

Moreover, to improve infrastructure and support distribution so that Namibian films are not only made, but also seen.

He, however, noted that public resources are limited, and the needs across sectors are numerous.

“But being realistic does not mean being passive. It means planning better, coordinating better and ensuring that when resources are available, they are used in ways that build a sustainable ecosystem for film, music, theatre and digital content.

Wrong Generation is now showing at Ster-Kinekor Grove Mall and Maerua Mall in Windhoek, from 19 to 26 June 2026.
