The 2026 FNB Women’s Super League (WSL) season came to a dramatic close on Sunday, with the FC Ongos Ladies being crowned as champions for the second time.

Coming into the final day of the season, both the NDF Mighty Gunners Ladies and FC Ongos Ladies had an opportunity to write their names on the trophy.

Mighty Gunners came into the day one point ahead of Ongos prior to their fixture against Windhoek City at the Independence Stadium.

Playing at the same time, Ongos went up against Julinho Athletic at the Julinho Athletic Field. The tension at the Independence Stadium was tangible, with news of Ongos taking the lead against Julinho reaching the stadium. With time dwindling down, Mighty Gunners knew that only a victory could secure them a sixth league title.

Mighty Gunners striker, Leena Alweendo, was inches away from clinching the title for Might Gunners after she hit the post late in the second half. By then, the entire stadium heard that Ongos took a 3-0 lead against Julinho. The Windhoek City defence kept the shop closed, with the match ending 0-0.

As the final whistle blew, the Mighty Gunners fell to their knees, falling short of the title by a single point.

Speaking to the media after the match, Mighty Gunners goalkeeper Melissa Matheus lamented the missed chances.

“We had chances to win it but we did not put them away. It really hurts, but let’s keep our heads up. Congratulations to Ongos,” she expressed.

Ongos Sporting Director and Brave Warriors legend, Ricardo Manetti, praised his side’s mentality on the final matchday.

“They were so confident; they played as if they knew the results were going to go their way today,” Manetti said.

He also praised all stakeholders involved in the growth and development of the women’s game.

“The development, management, and administration of the game has come a long way. Four years ago you would see scores like 18-0; you don’t see that anymore,” stated Manetti.

Ongos walked away with N$300,000 in prize money. Mighty Gunners received N$150,000 as runner-ups, whilst the Khomas Nampol ladies received N$100,000 for finishing in third.

Mighty Gunners’ sharp shooter, Leena Alweendo, received N$15,000 and N$10,000 for winning the player of the season and top goal scorer awards respectively. She completed the season with 22 goals and 6 assists.

Goalkeeper of the season went to Ongos’ South African shot stopper, Zoleka Nkabinde, who ended the season with 11 clean sheets in 13 matches.

FNB Namibia renewed its sponsorship of Namibia’s premier women’s football competition last year, by agreeing to sponsor the league with N$9.3 million for three years.
