Welwitchia University, formerly known as Welwitchia Health Training Centre, has successfully transitioned into a fully-fledged university after attaining university status in 2024.

This transformation has positioned the institution as one of the emerging key players within Namibia’s higher education sector and beyond the country’s borders. The university continues to expand its academic footprint by introducing market-driven programmes aimed at producing highly-skilled professionals capable of competing both locally and internationally.

Among the institution’s growing faculties is the School of Law, which has become one of the most promising centres for legal education in Namibia. The School of Law offers accredited and quality-assured qualifications designed to prepare students for careers within the legal profession, public service, corporate governance, and policy development.

One of the flagship programmes offered at the university is the Bachelor of Laws (LLB), an NQF Level 8 qualification. This is a five-year degree programme that equips students with both theoretical and practical legal knowledge.

The qualification provides graduates with entry into various legal and professional careers such as litigation lawyers, corporate legal counsel, judicial service officers, legal aid practitioners, human rights advocates, policy analysts, arbitrators, mediators, compliance officers, and legal academics.

To gain admission into the LLB programme, applicants must have obtained at least 30 points in NSSCO or NSSCAS, including a minimum C symbol in English. The university also accommodates mature age entry applicants. Prospective students applying through mature age entry must be at least 25 years old and possess at least five years of working experience in the field in which admission is sought. Applicants should also have at least 25 points in NSSCH or ordinary level qualifications.

In addition to the LLB programme, the School of Law also offers a Diploma in Paralegal Studies at NQF Level 6. This qualification is ideal for individuals wishing to enter the legal field without immediately pursuing a full law degree. Admission requirements include at least 25 points in five subjects at NSSCO, NSSCH, or NSSCAS level, together with a C symbol in English.

Mature age admission into the Diploma in Paralegal Studies is also possible. Applicants must have at least three years of experience within the legal environment, possess Grade 10 with a minimum of 20 points, and successfully pass the mature age entry tests administered by the university.

The Diploma in Paralegal Studies opens doors to numerous career opportunities within the legal and corporate sectors. Graduates may work as legal assistants, court clerks, legal researchers, contract administrators, court registry officers, personal assistants to in-house legal counsel, and legal support staff in banks, government institutions, and private companies. Importantly, this diploma also provides a pathway for progression into the LLB programme.

Recognising the growing demand for specialised legal skills, the university further offers short professional legal courses aimed at working professionals and individuals seeking to enhance their expertise. Among these programmes is the Certificate in Workplace Dispute Resolution. Admission into this course requires a Grade 12 certificate with at least 18 points and a D symbol in English, or Grade 11 with 22 points in five subjects together with two years of work experience.

Another specialised short course offered is the Certificate in Telecommunication Regulation and Regulatory Compliance. Admission requirements include Grade 12 with 18 points in five best subjects, or Grade 11 with 22 points plus at least two years of industry experience.

These short courses are offered over a duration of three months, making them ideal for professionals seeking flexible and practical legal training.

The law qualifications offered by the School of Law at Welwitchia University have undergone rigorous quality assurance processes and are fully accredited. The programmes are designed around relevant and industry-responsive curricula to ensure graduates are equipped with practical and employable legal skills.

Students are taught by experienced lecturers who possess both academic expertise and extensive industry experience. This means students learn from some of the finest legal minds — professionals who have not only studied law academically, but have also practiced within the legal field.

Such exposure gives students a balanced educational experience that combines theory with real-world legal application.

The university offers both face-to-face and blended learning modes, providing flexibility for students from different regions and working environments. Through blended learning, students can access lectures and learning materials online, provided they have a stable internet connection and access to a computer. This flexible approach allows many aspiring legal professionals to pursue their studies while balancing work and personal responsibilities.

Funding should not become a barrier for deserving students. Qualifying students may receive financial support through the Namibian government’s tertiary funding programme administered by the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund. The university’s dedicated support team assists students throughout the funding application process to ensure they study with ease and confidence.

The July intake at Welwitchia University is currently open, and spaces are limited. For aspiring lawyers, legal practitioners, mediators, and compliance professionals, this is an opportunity to begin a meaningful and impactful career in the legal field.

Your legal future starts today at Welwitchia University. Apply now and become part of a new generation of legal professionals shaping Namibia and beyond.
