The continued growth of Welwitchia University has once again demonstrated the institution’s commitment to transforming higher education in Namibia. Over the years, the university has expanded its footprint across the country by establishing campuses in various regions, bringing quality tertiary education closer to communities.
Among these strategic campuses is the Omusati Campus in Outapi, which continues to play a significant role in empowering young people and professionals in the region.
During a recent engagement with the Governor of Omusati Region, Immanuel Shikongo, he expressed strong support for the presence and expansion of Welwitchia University in the region. The governor emphasised that the university has become a vital institution in addressing the educational needs of the people of Omusati, particularly the youth population.
Omusati Region is home to more than 316,000 inhabitants, with a significant percentage consisting of young people seeking access to higher education and professional development opportunities.
According to Shikongo, the presence of Welwitchia University in Outapi has significantly reduced the burden faced by students who previously had to travel long distances to pursue tertiary education in towns such as Oshakati, Windhoek, Rundu, or Katima Mulilo.
“The establishment of Welwitchia University in Omusati is a game changer for higher education in our region,” remarked Shikongo.
“Many students and parents were previously forced to spend large amounts of money on accommodation, transport, and other living expenses outside the region. Today, students can study closer to home while receiving quality education,” he added.
The governor further noted that the region previously had limited tertiary education opportunities, with the well-known Ogongo Campus mainly focusing on agricultural-related programmes. However, Welwitchia University has introduced a broad range of academic programmes now providing students with diverse career opportunities and professional pathways.
Today, Welwitchia University offers programmes in Law, Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, Business Administration, Monitoring and Evaluation, Occupational Health and Safety, Supply Chain Management, Agriculture, Social Work, and numerous other disciplines.
In addition, the institution continues to expand postgraduate opportunities, including master’s degree programmes aimed at producing highly skilled professionals and leaders for Namibia’s future.
Shikongo also highlighted the importance of flexible learning opportunities provided by the university. He stated that many working professionals and government officials now have a chance to upgrade their qualifications without leaving their jobs or families behind.
The governor revealed that he personally intends to enrol for the upcoming July intake to pursue a law qualification at Welwitchia University.
“You know, law is very essential in our daily lives, especially for us as senior public officials, because it helps us make informed and correct decisions,” said Shikongo.
“My decision to study law at Welwitchia University is grounded in my conviction that education never stops. I am impressed by the university’s flexible learning approach, and I have therefore decided to pursue the programme immediately,” he shared.
His decision to enrol has already inspired many young people and professionals in the region who view lifelong learning as an important tool for career growth and leadership development.
Shikongo further praised Welwitchia University for contributing to regional development and skills training. He acknowledged that one of the university’s founders originates from Omusati Region, something he described as a source of pride for the people of the region.
“The university belongs to the people as much as it belongs to the nation. We are proud to see an institution with roots in Omusati growing into one of Namibia’s leading private universities,” he remarked.
The governor concluded by reaffirming his full support for Welwitchia University and encouraged residents of Omusati and surrounding regions to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the institution.
He urged students and parents to reduce unnecessary travel and accommodation costs by choosing to study locally while accessing internationally recognised qualifications and quality academic support.
