NNOC Announces Team Namibia for 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) announced the delegation that will be representing Namibia at the 23rd edition of Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Over 3,000 athletes representing 74 nations and territories will compete for top honours between 23 July and 2 August 2026.

President of the NNOC, Dr. Ndeulipula Hamutumwa, expressed that “Namibia is going to bring fire. To the athletes who have earned selection to Team Namibia, congratulations. Your selection is a testament to years of hard work and perseverance.”

Hamutumwa emphasised that the NNOC is committed to creating opportunities for Namibian athletes to excel and compete on the world stage.

He added that the Commonwealth Games form part of Team Namibia’s preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, British High Commissioner to Namibia, Neil Bradley, offered words of support to Team Namibia.

“The Commonwealth Games are more than a sporting event. They’re a celebration of our shared values as Commonwealth members. This is a proud moment for Namibia, but also for, most importantly, the athletes who have worked tirelessly to earn their place and for the nation that will cheer them on,” Bradley stated.

Namibia will be taking a total of 23 athletes (15 men and 8 women) to the Games, as well as a delegation of 39 members that includes coaches, medical personnel, technical officials, and administrators.

 

Team Namibia consists of the following athletes:

  • Athletics: Chenoul Lionel Coetzee, Elvis Khikhoe Gaseb, Charley Matundu, Ryan Williams
  • Para-Athletics: Ananias Shikongo (Guide: Even Tjiviju)
  •  Swimming: Jessica Olive Twaepwa Humphrey, Luke Arthur Matthew Beukes, José Canjulo, Oliver Benjamin Durand, Ronan Zuberg Wantenaar
  • Bowls: Amanda Steenkamp, Diana Viljoen, Ronald Christo Steenkamp, Waylon Wentzel
  • Boxing: Mischa Monique Araes, Philip Pumulo Mutalela Hoaseb, Gebhard Tonateni Ipinge, Petrus Jacobus Kotze, Tryagain Morning Ndevelo
  • Gymnastics: Sureshni Andrew, Anne-Leen Thorburn, Jonie Thorburn, Tyesha Humphries

 

Namibia has competed at every Commonwealth Games since debuting in 1994. Team Namibia has collected a total of 24 medals (5 gold, 4 silver, and 15 bronze).

Namibia collected four bronze medals at the 2022 Games from Helalia Johannes (Women’s marathon), Ananias Shikongo (Men’s 100m T11/T12), Alexander Miller (Men’s mountain bike cross country race), and Christine Mboma (Women’s 200m).
