Welwitchia University (WU), formerly known as Welwitchia Health Training Centre (WHTC), has transformed into a fully-fledged higher education institution.
In 2022, the institution officially attained university status, marking a milestone in its journey towards academic excellence and diversification. This transition reflects a deliberate and strategic effort to reposition WU from a traditionally health-focused training centre into a comprehensive university offering a wide range of academic programmes.
Today, Welwitchia University stands as one of Namibia’s fastest-growing private institutions, with more than seven campuses across the country. The university has expanded its academic portfolio beyond nursing and health sciences to include programmes in law, education, business management, agriculture, supply chain management, and many other fields.
This diversification is a clear indication of the institution’s commitment to responding to national development needs and labour market demands.
Among the flagship programmes offered at WU are qualifications in the field of law, including the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and the Diploma in Legal Studies.
These programmes are designed to equip students with strong legal foundations, critical thinking skills, and practical competencies required in Namibia’s legal and governance sectors.
In the School of Education, the university offers the Bachelor of Education in Senior Primary Education (Honours) (NQF Level 8, Grades 4–7), the Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education (Honours) (NQF Level 8, Grades 8–12), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education.
These programmes are tailored to produce qualified, competent, and innovative educators capable of contributing meaningfully to Namibia’s education system.
Welwitchia University also provides a variety of programmes in management and social sciences, including the Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Science in Project Management, Bachelor of Supply Chain Management (Honours), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management.
Importantly, all programmes offered by the university are accredited by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA), ensuring quality, credibility, and national recognition.
The university’s growth extends even further into postgraduate education. Students can pursue advanced qualifications such as a Master’s in Monitoring and Evaluation, Master of Occupational Health, Master of Higher Education, and Master of Project Management.
These programmes are designed to develop high-level expertise and leadership capacity across various sectors of the economy.
Looking ahead, Welwitchia University continues to innovate and expand. New programmes are being introduced to meet emerging industry needs, including the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), Bachelor of Education in Electrical and Electronic Studies (Honours), and qualifications in Accounting, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Human Resource Management, and Marketing and Communication at certificate, diploma, and degree levels.
Additionally, a Postgraduate Diploma in Assessment and Quality Assurance in Education and Training (NQF Level 8) is set to be rolled out.
This broad and dynamic academic offering demonstrates that Welwitchia University is no longer defined solely by its health programmes. Instead, it has evolved into a multi-disciplinary institution where students can pursue careers across a wide spectrum of professions.
Whether one’s passion lies in law, education, business, or health sciences, WU provides a platform for academic growth and professional success.
Welwitchia University’s transformation is a testament to its vision of becoming a leading institution in higher education. With its market-driven programmes, expanding campus footprint, and commitment to quality education, the university is well-positioned to shape the future of Namibia’s workforce.
For prospective students seeking a university that offers both diversity and relevance in its programmes, Welwitchia University presents an opportunity to study, grow, and succeed in a rapidly changing world.
