LEGAL AID TO PAY FOR A PRIVATE PSYCHIATRIST FOR WIFE KILLER

By: Justicia Shipena

The legal aid directorate has agreed to pay for a private mental assessment for former teacher and murder-accused Patrick Geingob.

Geingob’s lawyer Jermaine Muchali said this as he requested legal aid to pay for his second observation in the Windhoek High Court.

“Legal aid has responded, and they have indicated that they will pay for a private psychiatrist for the accused person,” said Muchali.

Muchali added that the only thing pending is for them to provide a quotation to legal aid.

Geingob is accused of stabbing his wife 12 times with a knife to death on the night of 14 April 2019.

He is facing one count of murder, read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act, one count of defeating or obstructing the course of justice, one count of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and one count of common assault.

Previously, Geingob told the court that he had a medical condition that affected his ability to differentiate between right and wrong at the alleged crime.

The State is alleging that he slapped his wife Merentha Geingos in 2011.

It is further alleged he killed his wife in their home kitchen in Okuryangava by stabbing her 12 times in front of their children.

His wife later died on 14 April in the same year upon arriving at Katutura State Hospital.

A post-mortem report handed to the court indicated that she had one stab wound to the abdomen and a deep stab wound to her right thigh.

He had also been denied bail in the matter.

On the night of the incident, Geingob is said to have arrived home late and had an argument with Geingos, leading to him stabbing her.

Furthermore, it is alleged that his wife and children were asleep on the night when Geingob arrived and loudly demanded entrance into the house.

She thus, opened the door and voiced her displeasure at his behaviour and went to the bedroom.

Geingob allegedly went to the kitchen, took a knife and attacked her.

Court documents show that residents in the area managed to remove the knife from Geingob.

It is further alleged that he went to a friend’s place where he got rid of the clothes.

Geingob handed himself over to the police.

In 2020, the police concluded investigations into the case of the 39-year-old teacher.

High Court judge Christi Liebenberg postponed the matter to resume on 08 March 2022 for the submission of the quotations.

In October 2015, Geingob was also arrested for allegedly raping a learner at People’s Primary School (PPS) in Katutura, where he taught.

In this matter, he also turned over himself to the police upon hearing he was being investigated for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl learner.

He was arrested but was granted bail.

The case was struck from the court roll at the time because the police investigations were not concluded.
