PDM pleads for end to Nafau-Shoprite stalemate

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) Secretary-General Manuel Ngaringombe has called on the leadership of NAFAU and Shoprite management to work on a mutually beneficial agreement.
NAFAU has taken on Shoprite over salaries and conditions of work with some demonstrations turning bloody in some regions.
The police have had to be roped in.
“The PDM notes with concern that the industrial action undertaken on 23 December 2020 by Shoprite employees countrywide seems to have no end in sight, particularly in these tough economic conditions made worse by the impact of the Novel Coronavirus.
“The PDM wants to put it on record that any loss of jobs resulting from a continued stalemate between NAFAU and Shoprite will be regrettable. At this point in time, the economy needs to protect jobs at all cost. Hence, it is important that NAFAU and Shoprite facilitate discussions in a fashion aimed at ending the industrial action in a manner mutually beneficial for both parties.
If the disagreements between NAFAU and Shoprite continues, we will then call upon the Labour Commissioner to intervene and act as a mediator between the two parties in efforts to resolve the matter as soon as possible. We further urge all stakeholders to remain calm and united during this difficult time. A protracted strike does not benefit anyone. The country needs to protect jobs,”  he said.
