CoW to Carry Out Digital Mapping of  Street Lights

City of Windhoek will do a digital mapping and verification of its entire streetlighting network.

The project, which is expected to be completed over 28 months, will involve the physical inspection of every municipal streetlight across Windhoek.

Windhoek has a streetlight network of around 17,000 municipal streetlight poles.

The city management explained that it has maintained this network through routine inspections, scheduled maintenance and the repair of faults reported by residents, businesses and Neighbourhood Watch groups.

The Municipality added that the continued growth of the network and increasing maintenance demands have highlighted the need for a more integrated, proactive and data-driven approach to infrastructure management.

Approximately N$12 million has been committed to the implementation of the project.

This information will enable the city to accurately identify which streetlights are connected to specific supply points and electrical circuits, improving fault tracing, maintenance planning, budgeting, network management and future infrastructure expansion.

The project is also expected to improve the reliability of the city’s streetlighting network, reduce fault response times, strengthen preventative maintenance programmes, and contribute to safer roads, neighbourhoods and public spaces throughout Windhoek.
