The health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula said the Office of the Prime Minister has approved the creation of more than 4 000 positions in his ministry.

Speaking to the media in Windhoek on Thursday, Dr Shangula said the 4 595 positions were created in various critical areas within the health ministry.

Some of the positions are for dentists, social workers, registered and enrolled nurses, emergency care practitioners, psychological counsellors, radiographers and physiotherapists.

According to Dr Kalumbi, the Office of the Prime Minister signed off the approval on 11 December 2019. The positions will, however, be filled over the medium-term expenditure framework.

“The total approved positions on the ministry’s structure now stands at 24 374,” Dr Shangula said.

To date, Dr Shangula revealed, the ministry has filled in 257 positions broken down as follows: 135 registered nurses, 22 pharmacists, 64 assistant pharmacists, 16 radiographers and 20 assistant radiographers.
