Plastic Recycling Company Takes Kavango East Old Mutual Prize

An entrepreneur in the Kavango East region who collects plastic waste and transforms it into environmentally friendly bricks without using water has won N$50,000 seed capital from Old Mutual Foundation to expand his business.
The Wapa-Nawa Recycling Centre won the the Old Mutual Sustainable, Economic & Empowerment Drive (OM SEED) funding for 2023, a programme done in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Accelerator Lab.
Ladislaus Shikerete, an entrepreneur who collects plastic waste and transforms it into environmentally friendly bricks without using water, was awarded the N$50,000 to grow his business.
His start-ups came out on top in the region to claim the seed capital.
Maria Haingura, who specialises in farming at Katiku Poultry Trading, came in second and received N$30,000.
The third prize of N$20,00Rozita went to Tjilunda of Kayowo Trading,which specialises in carpentry.
According to the Foundation, the three winners exemplify innovation and community impact by addressing crucial needs in their respective communities, adding that the three winners have portrayed dedication and ingenuity while shining a spotlight on the entrepreneurial prowess within their region.
The OM Foundation also highlighted that the entrepreneurs’ inspiring journey exemplifies the power of local initiatives in fostering economic growth, innovation, and community upliftment.
Wapa-Nawa Recycling founder Shikerete explained that their business is committed to both environmental cleanliness and providing employment opportunities for community members.
“This victory reinforces our mission of producing bricks from recyclable materials,” he said.
Shikerete explained that the prize money will significantly contribute to the Wapa-Nawa Recycling Centre’s growth and the procurement of essential materials.
Old Mutual Namibia Group Marketing and Sustainability Executive Mignon du Preez remarked that their initiatives continue to be a testament to the untapped potential within Namibia’s aspiring entrepreneurs.
She added that they have witnessed the positive impact entrepreneurs bring to the country.
“This success marks a significant milestone for OM SEED 2023 as it continues to identify and celebrate outstanding entrepreneurial talent across Namibia’s diverse regions” Du Preez stated.
She explained that the entrepreneurial spirit of Namibian entrepreneurs continues to inspire others to pursue their dreams, create change, and contribute to the nation’s prosperity.
