Botswana Flexes and Markets its Diamonds on Relay Medals

Botswana used its moment of hosting the World Athletics Relays last week to market its natural, polished diamonds.

For the first time, each medal at the World Relays featured a natural diamond, all sourced and polished in Botswana.

It was the first time the world relays were hosted on African soil.

The SADC nation made further history by winning the men’s 4x400m in a competition record of 2:54.47. It was the third-fastest men’s 4x400m in history.

Botswana’s Olympic star, Letsile Tebogo, was part of the history-making quartet, which also featured Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Bayapo Ndori, and Busang Collen Kebinatshipi.

South Africa finished in 2nd. The two nations have qualified multiple relay teams for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

Botswana not only hosted, but it also used the international platform to market its diamonds, as one of the world’s largest diamond producers.
