Welwitchia University: A Story of Women’s Excellence. Study at WU

In a world where women were once systematically disadvantaged, Namibia reflects a broader African story of resilience, progress, and transformation.

From the coastal city of Walvis Bay to the mountainous capital of Windhoek, from the mining community of Kombat to the calm riverbanks of Nkurenkuru, stretching to the eastern town of Katima Mulilo and the heart of Omusati in Outapi, one institution stands out as a beacon of hope and empowerment: Welwitschia University (WU).

Founded by two visionary Namibian women, Prof. Scholastika Iipinge and Dr. Monika Pendukeni, Welwitchia  University is a powerful testament to women’s leadership in shaping education and national development. What began as modest health training centres has evolved into a fully-fledged university with multiple campuses across the country, including Katima Mulilo, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Kombat, Nkurenkuru, Mururani, and Outapi.

Today, WU offers a diverse range of programmes tailored to meet the evolving demands of the job market. From Nursing and Law to Business Administration and Education, the university provides both traditional and blended learning opportunities designed to equip students with relevant, practical skills. Whether one aspires to become a lawyer, a social worker, or a business leader, WU offers academic pathways from certificate level to postgraduate qualifications, including Master’s degrees.

All programmes at Welwitchia University are accredited by the Namibian Qualifications Authority, ensuring that students receive education that meets national quality standards. This commitment to quality assurance has positioned WU as a trusted institution where graduates are well-prepared for employment and professional success.

Since its establishment in 2013, Welwitschia University has made significant inroads in Namibia’s private higher education sector. It has contributed not only to academic excellence, but also to research, policy development, and broader social advancement. Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Marius Hedimbi, one of the youngest in the country, the university continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to innovation, empowerment, and transformative education.

As the July intake opens, prospective students are encouraged to take the first step towards academic excellence. Welwitchia University is more than just an institution; it is a community where ambition is nurtured, and success is within reach. Whether pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies, WU offers an inclusive environment for all aspiring achievers.

Importantly, the university aligns with Namibia’s vision for accessible education. Through participation in national free education initiatives, students can pursue their studies with reduced financial burden, making higher education more attainable for many.
