I am ready to take on any parastatal – /Uirab

By: Rodney Pienaar

The outgoing chief executive officer of Namibia Ports Authority, Bisey Uirab has said that he is ready to take up the position of ceo at any parastatal whether it is in financial shambles or not during an interview with The Villager.

He further said that any parastatal can be transformed but there will be a need to determine whether there is hope for a transformation.

“I need to look at whether the environment of the parastatal suits me as professional. There are always challenges and it is not easy to be a captain of the ship. It all boils down to self-determination, persistence and working relations with staff and stakeholders.”

“As a ceo everything I did at NamPort was because I set the needs of the country first. It is important to consider the country’s image and where one wants to let a company get recognition in terms of future growth. One other thing is being able to relate to the working environment, that is very important,” he said.

Uirab said heads of institutions need to create good relations with staff as this leads to growth.

“I am happy to report that when I took over the reins at NamPort in 2009, the company was in a stable and healthy state. The company was making good profits, and was well-managed,” he said.

His two five-year terms at NamPort is scheduled to end in April this year, and was recently praised by the NamPort board of directors for his exceptional leadership.

“NamPort has a clear strategy and understands its mandate as it relates to the country’s national transport policy, commitment to becoming a logistics hub for Sadc and its role in contributing towards interregional trade. We have a clear strategy that is informed by our Vision 2030, the National Development Plans and the Harambee Prosperity Plan. The company is profitable, it has a strong brand presence in the Namibian market and also beyond Namibia’s borders.”
