Nam Generated Only 40% of its Energy in September

In September 2025, the country’s own generation provided 39.9 percent (160,531 MWh) of the total electricity supplied to the domestic economy as compared to July 2025, while imports accounted for the remaining 60.1 percent (242,151 MWh).

This pattern is consistent with July 2024, where imports also dominated the share of electricity demand.

In July 2025, electricity supplied to the domestic economy amounted to 402,682 MWh, a decrease from 417,049 MWh in the previous month, but an increase compared to 378,714 MWh recorded in July 2024.

In July 2025, total local electricity generation amounted to 160 531 MWh. The Ruacana Hydro Power Station was the main contributor, providing 81.4% (130 610 MWh), followed by independent power producers (IPPs) with 15.1% (24 169 MWh).

The Omburu PV Solar Power Station accounted for 2.7 percent (4,257 MWh) of the total local output generated. The Anixas 2 Diesel Power Station ranked fourth, supplying 0.7 percent (1,158 MWh) of the total local generation.

South Africa remained the main source of electricity imports, contributing 43.0 percent of the total imported electricity, followed by Zambia with 32.9 percent.

The Day Ahead Market-SAPP accounted for 10.2 percent, while Zimbabwe and Eskom Orange River supplied 9.2 and 4.7 percent, respectively.

In terms of volume, total electricity sales stood at 354,131 MWh in July 2025, down from 368,848 MWh in June 2025, but notably higher than the 338,886 MWh recorded in July 2024.

Most of the domestic electricity sales were directed to Redistributors LPU, which accounted for 66.4 percent, followed by the mining sector with 26.2 percent, and Eskom Orange River with 3.4 percent.

During the review period, Namibia exported a total of 16,236 MWh of electricity, with 100.0 percent of the exports supplied to STEM Sales – Southern Africa Power Pool.
