Why I Chose IUM: A Journey of Purpose, Service, and Professional Growth:  Mrs. Frederika Amutse-Shigwedha.

Choosing the right university is one of the most critical decisions in a professional journey, particularly for individuals committed to public service and national development. For me, enrolling at the International University of Management (IUM) was not merely an academic choice, it was a strategic decision rooted in purpose, ambition, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to Namibia’s development agenda.

Why I Chose the International University of Management (IUM)

My decision to study at IUM was guided by how well its academic programmes aligned with my personal goals and professional aspirations. I was determined to acquire knowledge and skills that were not only academically sound, but also practical and relevant to the realities of Namibia’s public sector. IUM stood out as an institution that understands the country’s developmental needs and deliberately structures its programmes to respond to them.

What further strengthened my confidence in IUM was the calibre and performance of its graduates. Across government ministries, local authorities, parastatals, and the private sector, IUM alumni are visible, competent, and impactful. Their professionalism, leadership, and ability to translate theory into action convinced me that IUM was an institution capable of producing graduates who bring real change to organisations and communities.

Another decisive factor was affordability and flexibility. IUM’s tuition fees were reasonable and structured in a way that made higher education accessible without compromising quality. Like many working professionals, I had multiple responsibilities, including work and personal commitments. IUM’s flexible learning model allowed me to balance these demands effectively, ensuring that my academic journey complemented rather than disrupted my professional life. This flexibility made it possible for me to progress academically while remaining productive in my role within the public service.

Quality of Education and Lecture Delivery

Before committing to my studies, I took time to research the quality of education offered at IUM. I discovered that the institution is supported by lecturers and professors with strong academic credentials as well as extensive industry and professional experience. This combination was particularly important to me, as it ensured that learning was not limited to theory, but enriched with real-world perspectives and practical insights.

At IUM, lectures were engaging, structured, and relevant. Concepts were not taught in isolation; instead, they were linked to real challenges faced in workplaces, especially within the public sector. This approach enhanced critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, competencies that are essential in fields such as disaster risk management and public administration.

However, I strongly believe that the true measure of an institution’s quality lies in the impact of its graduates. In this regard, IUM has proven itself. Its graduates are excelling across various sectors, introducing innovative ideas, developing practical solutions, and transforming systems. This is not an exaggeration. We are visible. We are impactful. We are contributing meaningfully to national development.

The alignment between academic theory and practical application at IUM is exceptional. The knowledge acquired is immediately applicable in the workplace, empowering graduates to improve efficiency, strengthen governance, and enhance service delivery. In my own professional role within the Disaster Risk Management Coordination Sub-Division, the skills and insights gained at IUM continue to inform my work and decision-making.

Message to Prospective Master’s Students

To anyone considering pursuing a master’s degree, particularly working professionals seeking growth and advancement, IUM is a reliable choice. Choosing to study at IUM is one of the best career decisions one can make. It is not merely an academic qualification; it is an investment that yields lifelong value, professional confidence, and personal growth.

IUM equips students with knowledge that is relevant, practical, and aligned with real-world demands. It nurtures discipline, critical thinking, and leadership; qualities that are essential for those who aspire to make a difference in their professions and communities.

I encourage prospective master’s students to take the step with confidence. Go for it, you will never regret it. The journey may be demanding, but the rewards – in terms of competence, credibility, and contribution – are immeasurable. IUM does not just educate, it empowers.

I proudly describe IUM as a community University. An institution dedicated to addressing real societal challenges while uplifting the career development of even the most disadvantaged Namibians. A pillar of empowerment, inclusivity, and national development.
