IUM: An Institution Dedicated to Finding Namibia’s Solutions — IUM Researchers in Ghana

By: Stephanus Pombili

The International University of Management (IUM) stands today not only as Namibia’s premier private university, but as an institution deeply committed to finding practical, research-driven solutions to the country’s most pressing challenges.

Since its establishment, IUM has consistently demonstrated that higher education is more than teaching and learning, it is a transformative engine for national development, innovation, and societal advancement. Through strategic partnerships, international engagements, and bold investments in research infrastructure, IUM continues to shape Namibia’s academic and developmental landscape.

At the centre of this vision is IUM’s unwavering dedication to producing knowledge that benefits Namibia directly. The institution has invested heavily in research capacity, making strides in both local and international collaborations. A landmark achievement currently underway is the finalisation of a state-of-the-art research centre in Swakopmund. This facility, the first of its kind among private universities in Namibia, will position IUM as a leading force in data analysis, digital innovation, and applied research. With modern laboratories, digital hubs, and research spaces, the centre is expected to revolutionise the way research is conducted in Namibia.

IUM has already been working closely with critical national institutions such as the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) on tax and data analysis initiatives that support evidence-based policy making. The university is also collaborating with major health organisations including Meditech South Africa, Swakopmund Family Health (SFH), and NAMLS to enhance digital health systems and laboratory innovations. These partnerships are not merely academic; they directly contribute to enhancing national service delivery, strengthening public health infrastructure, and improving governance systems.

Beyond local collaborations, IUM continues to cultivate a strong international footprint. The university has established exchange programmes and joint research projects with respected global institutions such as universities in Russia and Germany’s DHBW. These initiatives provide students and staff with exposure to diverse knowledge systems, cutting-edge technologies, and global best practices, strengthening the competitiveness and relevance of IUM graduates.

It is within this spirit of global engagement and research excellence that IUM’s latest milestone unfolds. Six IUM researchers are currently in Ghana at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) for a research project meeting that underscores the institution’s growing international impact. Their participation forms part of the Twin Transitions in Sub-Saharan Africa Project (TeProd), an initiative co-funded by the European Union.

TeProd aims to improve professional development for lecturers and students across Sub-Saharan Africa, focusing specifically on digitalisation and green transition competencies — the so-called “twin transitions” shaping the future of education and development. It brings together five universities: The International University of Management (IUM), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Ghana (UG), Technical University of Kosice (TUKE), Slovakia and Haaga Helia University of Applied Sciences (HH), Finland

The consortium is meeting at UEW from 08-12 December 2025, working collectively to strengthen higher education institutions’ capacity to deliver modern, sustainable, and digitally-driven teaching and learning. The project is particularly timely, given the rapid global shift towards digital education, climate-conscious policies, and the demand for graduates equipped with skills fit for the future.

Participating in this important consortium, IUM once again affirms its commitment to contributing to solutions that extend beyond its borders while bringing back valuable insights that can strengthen Namibia’s own education system. The project also aligns perfectly with IUM’s long-term research agenda, which prioritises climate change resilience, technological innovation, and high-quality teaching competencies.

Representing IUM in Ghana are six distinguished researchers whose expertise and dedication continue to uplift the institution’s global profile: Dr. Elock Shikalepo, Principal Investigator, Dr. Silohenda Amuthenu, Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Alpha Ndeunyema, Researcher, Mr. Timoteus Sheepo, Researcher, Dr. Tomas Shivolo, Researcher, and Dr. Sioni Iikela, Researcher.

Their participation demonstrates not only IUM’s growing academic strength, but also the university’s commitment to empowering its researchers to take part in high-impact global projects. The trip also highlights IUM’s evolving role as a solution-driven institution. By actively engaging in regional and international collaborations, IUM strengthens its capacity to design research solutions tailored to Namibia’s needs, from digital transformation to climate resilience and education reform.

The insights gained from the consortium will contribute to developing new programmes, updating teaching methodologies, and integrating green and digital competencies into the IUM curriculum. As Namibia positions itself for the future, institutions like IUM are becoming increasingly important pillars of societal development. The university’s presence on international platforms sends a strong message: Namibia is ready to participate, innovate, and lead in global academic and development conversations.

In conclusion, IUM continues to prove that it is more than an institution of learning; it is a national solutions centre. Through its investments, partnerships, research engagements, and global collaborations, IUM is shaping a future where academic research directly transforms communities, enhances governance, and strengthens Namibia’s position on the global stage.

The ongoing work in Ghana stands as another example of IUM’s commitment to excellence, impact, and innovation, qualities that place it firmly among Africa’s rising research institutions.
