Good policies and frameworks are necessary for the development of the oil and gas industry, but even more important is that:
Namibian entrepreneurs play a role and get involved in developing this sector.
I had the pleasure of being the keynote speaker at the Namibia International Energy Conference 2024.
At this conference we established that apart from creating great frameworks and policies, Namibia requires one critical thing.
Namibian entrepreneurs need to play a deliberate role in the development of this new industry.
Oil & gas is a new industry for us, and therefore we will naturally lack the required expertise. But, this should not dishearten us. Rather it should motivate us to acquire as much industry knowledge, training, and insight as possible now, so you are ready to jump right in when needed.
You’ll need to be proactive and innovative in how you prepare for the upcoming challenges. You serve as the backbone for innovation and development in this sector.
With all that in mind, let us avoid feeling entitled as Namibian entrepreneurs. These resources are ours and belong to the Namibian people but an attitude of feeling owed only stifles development and innovation.
Let’s not expect that things will be given to us on a silver platter, instead, we should develop a culture of hard work and improving our skillset to become the right people for the job.
Be ready to compete and collaborate with your fellow countrymen as this will accelerate the development of this industry.
Finally, for all other stakeholders in oil and gas, let us all promote transparency and good governance in our dealings.
We need this to keep Namibia a top investment destination. We must build a reputation as a strong business partner.
