Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has called for greater accountability in the implementation of public projects, warning that delays deny communities employment opportunities and undermine the impact of government spending.

Ngurare’s remarks were delivered by Kavango East Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka during the official opening of the ninth Rundu Annual Trade Fair at the Rundu Trade Fair Centre on Monday.

He said the Rundu Town Council received N$75 million for infrastructure improvements during the 2025/26 financial year, while N$3.5 million was allocated for constructing informal trading platforms in the 2026/27 financial year.

Ngurare urged the council to ensure that the allocations translate into completed projects, improved municipal services and more economic opportunities for residents.

He also highlighted Rundu’s potential in agriculture, timber, tourism, agro-processing and cross-border trade, calling for improved municipal services, serviced land for commercial and industrial activities, and stronger support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

He urged established businesses to support smaller enterprises through mentorship, local procurement and partnerships, while encouraging local processing of agricultural products to strengthen markets for farmers, retain economic value in the region and create jobs.

Meanwhile, Rundu Town Council Chief Executive Officer Olavi Nathanael said the trade fair provides a platform to bridge the gap between vision and implementation, connect local SMEs with large corporations, and strengthen cooperation between the public and private sectors.

Nathanael said the event brings together investors, industry leaders and entrepreneurs to explore business opportunities, establish partnerships and unlock the region’s economic potential.

He emphasised that organising an event of this magnitude requires a shared vision, dedication and collaboration.

Deputy Mayor Regina Nekare welcomed exhibitors and guests to Rundu, describing it as a town of opportunity.

Nathanael also acknowledged the guidance of national leaders and the regional governor in creating an enabling environment for local economic development, while expressing gratitude to traditional leaders for their support.

The trade fair, running from 23 to 31 October 2026, is being held under the theme “Embracing Technology for Sustainable Business Growth.” It aims to promote entrepreneurship, investment, partnerships and sustainable economic development in Rundu and the wider region.

The 9th Rundu Annual Trade Fair attracted 206 exhibitors, up from 133 last year, including international exhibitors from Tanzania, Cameroon and Kenya.

At the fundraising gala dinner on 3 October, the Rundu Town Council raised N$1.3 million in monetary and in-kind contributions for hosting costs, surpassing N$1,075,470 in cash recorded, plus N$98,300 extra from leaders and stakeholders.
