Precision Surgery Robotic Technology Introduced at Lady Pohamba

Lady Pohamba Private Hospital (LPPH) unveiled the Cori Robotic-Assisted Surgical system earlier this week in Windhoek.

The system will be used on patients requiring partial or complete knee replacement surgeries.

The supplier, medical technology company Smith+Nephew, says it provides an interactive, fully-functional software tool for surgeons to become familiar with creating a surgical plan for orthopaedic procedures.

Dr. Paddy Murphy, a director at LPPH, said that it is a great opportunity for Namibia’s medical landscape to have access to technology aiding in complex procedures or surgeries.

“Innovation only truly becomes successful when it is accessible. We don’t view the system as an exclusive milestone, we see it as a great opportunity to raise the standard of surgical care for every Namibian,” Murphy outlined.

Roger Hummerstone, Reconstruction & Robotic Sales Specialist for Smith+Nephew, provided a presentation on the various kinds of surgical tasks the system is able to assist with.

“We also realised that people or patients are requiring more from joint replacement surgeries – like the gentleman you saw climbing a mountain again. There are cyclists who need a replacement as well. So, we are also assisting people who wish to return to a previous state of life before the procedure,” he added.

A Robotic-Assisted Surgical system enables surgeons to create a 3D digital model of the patient’s anatomy in real time, reducing the need for preoperative computerised tomography scans (CT scans).
