Poultry production affected by drought

The strain of the persistent 3 year drought has had a negative impact on the production of poultry products in Namibia, Namib Poultry told The Villager this week.

"The drought has affected Poultry production quiet negatively, making business more difficult as less water needs to be used per kg of meat produced, this causing the production process to become less efficient resulting in additional capital cost in excess to N$10 million that had to be invested to ensure enough saving in order to ensure sustainability’’ Namibia Poultry Chief Executive Officer, Ian Collard said. This has made the cost of business higher and more uncompetitive compared to imports.

"The poultry industry was specifically developed for import substitution in order to supply local markets with produce thus we are not exporting”, Collard added. Because Infant Industry Protection was never implemented for the chicken broiler industry in Namibia, Namibia poultry industries has never been afforded Infant Industry Protection to date. Protection however does not exist currently via another protection vehicle of Government, namely the Import and Export Control Act. Last year, The Villager spoke to commercial poultry farmers who said that they were not benefiting from the export of chicken as most farmers dealing in hatch small chicks, meat and egg production for local consumption only.

Poultry farmers said they experience decrease in sales between January and March as households would be financially recovering from the festive season. After March, there is an annual steep increase in egg sales which boosts the production of eggs. The demand for eggs also lasts till the end of the year, as it is more common for people to eat eggs during the winter. Because local producers have to meet the local demand, exporting chicken products to other countries is not on the cards yet. About 3 years ago the broiler project under the NBI came into operation. There was a limitation on poultry meat imports as only 900 tons of poultry meat was allowed to be imported per month
