Nanvula Mutango claimed not to have known that having cannabis on her person was illegal when she appeared before Magistrate Gerrit Brand van Pletzen last week.
The 30-year-old woman was charged with one count of possessing illegal drugs after she was arrested with the cannabis in Windhoek’s informal settlement of Okuryangava.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Mutango was arrested on 6 February of this year with 70 grams of cannabis valued at N$210, which she claimed she used for medicinal purposes.
During the first proceedings of her case, the suspect was asked if she knew that it is prohibited by law to have cannabis, and she said she did. However, she maintained in the same breath that she was unaware it was wrong to possess it if it was for her own use, according to the court transcripts.
A warrant of arrest was issued for the suspect on 15 June, and her bail money provisionally forfeited to the State as she failed to appear on that date.
The bail return date was set as 29 June 2015.
The suspect was earlier released on bail of N$1000.
