A 53 year old woman was raped in Gibeon, while attending a family member’s funeral last week.
NamPol Public Relations Officer, Inspector Slogan Matheus confirmed the incident reported on case number Gibeon CR2101/2015, "I can confirm that I received a report of such an incident in Gibeon. What I do know is that police investigation are still ongoing into the matter," said the Inspector.
The woman who was camping at a family home during the funeral preparations was raped by family member who was attending the funeral.
According to the informant, Hans Wenzil who also attended the funeral, the perpetrator attacked the victim who was sleeping in a room with other women.
"We were all sleeping when we heard a woman scream and when we woke up, we were told that someone has been raped," said Wenzil  who is the attacker’s uncle.
The woman, Wenzil said, awoke to a man helping himself on top her and he fled room as she screamed to alerting other people.
"According to what she told us, she just awoke to a man on top of her. The man had partly removed some of her clothes and was rapping her.  She screamed, but the good thing is that she recognised the man," said Wenzil, who also said the alleged rapist is generally known to be a good person.
The alleged rapist, Wenzil said, fled from the funeral that same night and has since not been seen in the area.
"We have reported the matter to the police, the whole of Mariental is out to get him along with the police. He is a very well known figure around here and it won’t be long before he is captured," said Wenzil.
Wenzil related the shame his nephew has brought to the family. "He has brought so much shame to us, we are all one family really. How do you rape a bereaved member of the family while you are in mourning yourself? We are struggling to make sense of this unfortunate situation, the sooner is arrested the better."
