PK De Villiers Secondary School and Karasburg High School will represent the Karas region on 18 November at the National High Schools Spelling and Quiz Competition (SpelQuizBee) finals at Hilton Hotel in Windhoek.The two schools came out tops in the regional SpelQuizBee competition sponsored by Namdeb and held at Suiderlig Secondary School in Keetmanshoop last week.The two schools will meet Windhoek and Khomas High School, the qualifying schools from Khomas region and other qualifying schools from other regions yet to be announced.P K De Villiers qualified with a total of 43 points followed by Karasburg High School (40), Luderitz High School (24) and Ernst Jager High School (21) in the regional finals which had 12 schools competing. “This is an initiative in education that is excellent to promote the correct usage of language, spellings and improvements of vocabulary among children. So we strongly hope that this will continue next year as well,” said Janita Von Weillich from Namdeb, adding, “Spelling literacy is one of the components of effective communication and professionalism and general knowledge is the barometer of competency and development level of each and every individual.” In the spelling competition, Nelson Fillipus, a Grade 8 student from Suiderlig High School and Santagelo Talliaard a Grade 9 student from P K De High School will represent Karas region in the junior spellings competitions whilst Maria Nghimane (Grade 12) from Suiderlig High School and Kamati Frans (Grade 11) from Karasburg High School qualified in the senior Bee category.SpelQuizBee is a Ministry of Education initiative administered by Prime Focus Magazine and sponsored by Coca-Cola, Macmillan Education Namibia, Shell Namibia, Zebra Publishers and the British Council of Namibia. The eventual winning school will share N$15 000, and each gets an Acer laptop with a 3G unit and gold medals among other prizes. The show is aired on national television (NBC) every Thursday at 17h00.
