Katutura rapist denied bail

After being arrested for raping a woman at knife-point, a man made his first appearance in the Katutura Magistrate Court last week, where his bail was objected.
Lazarus Gawaseb, from Dolam, was denied bail, because of the seriousness of the offense and for the fact that the victim is known to him.
The 27-year-old attacked the woman in Katutura on 26th of last month when he cornered her with a knife and forcefully undressed and then raped her. He was, however, only tracked down by the police the following day and taken into custody at the Windhoek Police Station where he has since been detained.
When he appeared in court last week, his rights were read to him and told he is in a position to apply for legal aid.
He will remain in police custody till his next court appearance in January next year.
