An Angolan man who dealt counterfeit US dollar bills, Augusto Domingos (30 ), died after his motorbike crashed against a stone enroute to Angola from Rundu.
According to one of the people he had ripped off, Magnus Katanga, Domingos had been fleeing back home to Angola at the time of the crash.
“He had just past the border when the accident happened. He gave us fake US dollar bills and when we realised the money was fake, we contacted his Namibian girlfriend who told us that he was already on his way back to Angola,” said Katanga.
Although he declined to reveal the exact amount of money that he had lost in the fiddle, he revealed that it was over N$10 000.
He said he has dealt with the deceased Angolan on several occasions before but this was the first time that counterfeits were involved.
“He has never done this to us before. I have heard rumours about him trading fake stuff but I thought they were just rumours,” he said.
Katanga expressed his dismay over being conned but insisted that Domingos did not deserve to die.
“I’m disappointed that he did that to me but I feel sorry for him. It is very sad for him to have died like that. No amount of money can change what happened to him,” said Katanga.
Police officers at Kahenge are aware of the incident but they declined to comment.
“I can’t make a comment right now, it is still sketchy and we are still trying to fit everything together,” said Inspector Chrispin Muvebo.
He also said there was another motorbike crash last month involving another Angolan national in the same area; one Fransisco Kahuma, also understood to be a businessman.
