Besides offering innovative technology, technology giant company; Samsung, has now taken another route by aiming at enhancing the education system within Africa through its electronic products.
Samsung Electronics SA (Pty) Ltd this week told The Villager that its aim is not only to offer technological products and services but also to take those to another level by using its products as educational tools.
“We have started building different products, which can enhance education, especially in towns that do not have schools within their areas or nearby towns; hence, children end up being forced to walk long distances to get to school, or simply drop out of school. It has emerged that this issue is found in many villages in many African rural areas,” Samsung Electronics SA sales manager, South Africa, Rohan van Heerden, pointed out.
In order to curb that issue, he added that Samsung has started building products such as solar-powered schools, which are made from containers. Those containers are built in an innovative way that they have enough space for a classroom inside them allowing room for a number of children and teachers including all the necessary equipment needed for the classrooms.
Those solar-powered schools can be built everywhere they are needed; they are basically mobile schools. Van Heerden cited the town of Thembisa, South Africa where that initiative has already started.
In addition, Samsung Electronics SA has also built solar notebooks; Intel Samsung Lab PCs made especially for children which can also be used in schools situated out of reach of technology.
The Intel Lab PCs can be customised according to the children’s grade levels with related curricula, allowing those children or students to be updated on school work.
Education is not the only sector Samsung is looking at working with partners to empower rural communities but in various other sectors including mining, engineering, oil industry amongst others.
As pointed out by Van Heerden, the reason for their presence at the oil and gas conference was to promote products that can be used in that specific industry. “ Samsung’s approach in Africa has become more aggressive as we have realised that the continent has so much to offer, so Samsung has decided to have different customised products for each industry and country needs,” he said.
Samsung produces numerous products around the world ranging from personal computers, television sets, mobile phones and their accessories, computer monitors, dish washers, vacuum cleaners and many more.
