Roadside elderly rape in Kavango

by Chris-Paul

a   man from the Kavango, Muhako Kutenda, 40, has been arrested after raping a 59-year old woman by the road side.
The incident happened on the road leading to the village of Mushashani in the Mukwe District.
Police reports indicate that the rape occurred at about eight o’clock in the morning.
The victim, (name withheld for fear of victimisation), was on her way home from visiting a friend, when she came across her assailant.
A family relative, Renathe Muhako related, that Kutenda started by making unwelcoming remarks towards his victim and when she refused his advances, he forcefully pinned her to the ground.
"She was alone and being old, she could not fight back" said Muhako.
"We know him. He stays here in this village. He doesn’t look like someone who is capable of doing that. We all are just wondering what got into him," she said.
The victim reported the ordeal to one of her friends who told the rest of the family.
"There were some family members who were considering not reporting the matter to the police because of the kind of person Kutenda is," Muhako said.
But, she said, it was decided a day after the incident to alert the police.
"I don’t think he denied anything when he was confronted by the police, and I also know that his family is very angry as well," said Muhako.
She added that both families have requested that the suspect should not be granted bail.
The regional crime investigation co-ordinator, Inspector Chrispin Muvebo, confirmed the rape charge opened on case number CR 13/04/2012.
