Pregnant minor reports rape

by Chris-Paul

A 15-year-old Omusati girl from Otamanzi Village says she is pregnant from a rape incident perpetrated by her neighbour and Onandjo Combined School mate.
Omusati Police confirmed that the girl told them that her neighbour Malakia Iyambo, 19, dragged and ravaged her under the cover of bushes in February.
Warrant Officer, Lineekela Shikongo said the minor hid her ordeal from the family until after realising this month that she had missed her monthly periods.
“She confided in her elder sister who then told her mother. The mother asked her to narrate what had happened to her and that is how the story surfaced,” said Officer Shikongo. “She said that on her way from where her mother had sent her, the boy grabbed her and pulled her into the bushes where he raped her. But, as with most minors, she was too shy to tell anyone what had happened to her.”
Her mother took her to a doctor in Oshakati where the pregnancy tests were run and she tested positive. The minor’s furious mother then decided to approach Iyambo’s family and with their help, confronted Iyambo.
“Iyambo flatly denied raping or engaging in sexual contact of any sort with her, which really upset the minor’s family,” stated Shikongo.
She said the family was left with no choice but to report the matter to the police.
Iyambo was arrested last week and has been charged with rape, under case number CR 57/04/2012.
According to Shikongo, because of her condition, the Grade Six pupil has since stopped going to school.
