Eleven-year-old fatally shoots 13-year-old at Iimbili Combined School
Tragedy struck today at Iimbili Combined School when an 11-year-old learner took a gun and fatally wounded a 13-year-old grade 5 student (names withheld) resulting in the learner’s untimely death, the education, arts and culture ministry has revealed in a press statement.
“It is with great sadness that the ministry of education, arts and culture herewith announces the death of a grade five, 13-year-old male learner at Iimbili Combined School in the Ontunganga Circuit in Ohangwena region.”
“The fatal incident happened today when an 11-year-old took a gun to school and while playing with the firearm during break-time, fatally wounded a classmate resulting in the untimely death of the leaner,” permanent secretary Sanet Steenkamp has said.
Education minister, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa has conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family and the affected school community.
The Ohangwena Regional Directorate visited the school, engaged the parents and will continue to offer psychological support to the family and learners, Steenkamp said.
“At this stage, the ministry can only communicate the established facts as a police investigation of the tragic circumstances is currently underway. The ministry is finalising the School Safety Framework that speaks to an atmosphere of trust, peace, respect and care in the school environment and which will be rolled out soon,” she added.
