IUM: From Educating to Empowering – A University Dedicated to its People’s Future

By: Stephanus Pombili

The International University of Management (IUM) has grown far beyond its identity as an academic institution. Today, it stands as a symbol of hope, empowerment, and social progress in Namibia.

For many years, IUM has consistently demonstrated that education is not merely about lectures and examinations, but about shaping lives, uplifting communities, and inspiring national transformation. Its contributions stretch from the classroom into the very heart of society, touching health, business, sports, and even mental well-being.

Recently, IUM captured national attention when it became the first institution in Namibia to donate medical equipment valued at N$8.5 million. This donation was not merely symbolic; it was strategic and impactful. Alongside the equipment, IUM has also committed to providing professors with the expertise required to train health officials on how to operate and maintain the machines effectively.

Over the next five years, the university will subsidize an additional N$25 million to support and remunerate these professionals. This holistic approach ensures that the donation does not end at the handover ceremony, but continues to empower the health sector for years to come.

Beyond healthcare, IUM remains deeply committed to economic empowerment. Through the David Namwandi Trust, the institution has availed N$3 million to graduates who can present bankable business proposals. This initiative provides young people with the financial head start needed to convert their ideas into thriving enterprises.

The support does not stop at funding; recipients also receive coaching and mentorship, equipping them with the skills required to manage and sustain their businesses. Many young entrepreneurs attribute their success to the university’s faith in them, proving that empowerment becomes truly powerful when paired with guidance and opportunity.

IUM’s social influence extends even further. Through the David Namwandi Trust, the institution sponsored an AC Promotions boxing bonanza with over N$300,000, a significant contribution that reflects its belief in diverse talents and community development. This gesture confirms IUM’s commitment to fostering excellence not only academically, but also in sports and youth empowerment. When institutions invest in individuals’ dreams, entire communities feel the impact.

Mental health awareness has also become a key pillar of IUM’s social mission. Recognising the silent struggles many people face, the university has taken bold steps to promote emotional well-being.

Workshops, campaigns, and campus-wide discussions have made IUM a safe space where students and staff feel supported. This compassionate environment inspires trust and respect, and it is one of the key reasons why many students choose IUM, not merely for its state-of-the-art infrastructure, but for its nurturing spirit.

The institution teaches, guides, empowers, and ensures that its graduates are equipped to serve the nation with dignity and professionalism. Across Namibia, the influence of IUM is visible and undeniable. From Mukuro in the mighty Kavango, to Ohangwena, and from Oshana all the way to Walvis Bay, IUM graduates are working in various capacities and shaping the country’s economic and social landscape. In almost every household across the northern regions, the name IUM frequently surfaces, because its graduates are present, impactful, and respected.

A closer look at the Ongwediva Campus highlights the university’s positive ripple effect on local communities. The town is vibrant with economic activity because of IUM students and graduates. In nearly every flat or rental property, one is likely to meet students pursuing their dreams at IUM.

Landlords, businesses, and service providers all benefit from the constant flow of students. Employers, too, recognise the value of IUM graduates, often noting their discipline, confidence, and readiness to work. As many students recall, “At IUM, we are taught, not just lectured.”

IUM’s journey, from educating to empowering, demonstrates that a university can be far more than a centre of knowledge. It can be a force for change, a pillar of hope, and a catalyst for national development.

In every donation, every mentorship session, every graduate, and every community touched, IUM continues to reaffirm its mission: to empower Namibia, one student at a time.
