WHS and Hage Geingob in SpelQuizBee finals
Windhoek High School and Hage Geingob Secondary School will represent the Khomas regional zone in the inter-zonal National High Schools Spelling and Quiz (SpelQuizBee) competition that will be held at Hilton Hotel in October.
The two schools beat 24 other Windhoek schools that competed in the debut season of the Quiz Bee competition which began in May this year.
The Khomas zonal finals were held at Immanuel Shifidi Secondary school on Friday where the last six schools were group in two groups.
Windhoek High School beat Windhoek Technical School (HTS) (54 points) and Khomas High School (61) with a total of 63 points in a tightly contested Group.
In Group Two Hage Geingob came out leading with a total of 75 points followed by Jahn Mohr (30) and Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School with 29 points. The host replaced Eldorado who did not attend the event.
Cinnaman Pieters from HTS and Natalia Shakella from Khomas High School joined Alexander Van Neel from Eldorado High School in the Spelling Bee competition where they will represent the region at the inter-zonal finals where contests from the other regions are expected to take part.
The SpelQuizBee zonal competitions will be conducted in the other six zonal regions between now and October, ahead of the finals.
Each zonal competition is expected to produce two winning schools and two learners that will represent it at the inter-zonal competitions in the quiz and spelling competition.
Shakella and Pieters could not outwit each other in the deciding finale as they went word for word, until the judges allowed them to proceed to the finals both of them.
“We had to be human because these are exceptional kids. For a debut season, we can allow them to go to the finals both of them, since we do not know the quality of the students from other regions,” said Judge Carmen Dentlinger.
Van Neel’s winning word was ‘Miscellaneous’ while the other two contestants got the following words right, ‘Acrimonious’; ‘Aerodynamic’; ‘Affiliation’; ‘Aggrandizement’, ‘Alliteration’; ‘Belligerent’; ‘Bereavement’ and ‘Boulevard’, until the judges called it a draw.
SpelQuizBee is for Grade 9 up to 12 learners and is aired every Thursday at 17H00 on national broadcaster, NBC.
SpelQuizBee is a Ministry of Education program run by Prime Focus magazine and sponsored by Coca-Cola, Macmillan Education Namibia, Shell Namibia, Zebra Holdings, British Council and OTB Sport and Trophy World.
SpelQuizBee is held in two categories, the Spelling Bee and the Quiz Bee. The Spelling Bee has both and junior and senior categories.
Quiz questions and spelling words are composed from the current examination curriculum with the assistance of the Ministry of Education.
Winners of the Quiz Bee will each get a floating trophy, an Acer laptop with 3G for each member, gold medal each and will have an opportunity to meet the President, besides the N$ 15 000 to be shared by the winning group.
The second prize offers N$ 500 scholarship for each pupil, N$ 500 MacMillan/Edumeds voucher, and silver medals for each pupil and a meet-the-Namibian role model of choice for the team.
The school that wins two or more of the categories stands to get a year’s fuel deal from sponsors Shell.
