Thieves Take Off With Jackpot Money

By: Eba Kandovazu

The police in Oshana region are investigating an armed robbery after four unknown men ambushed the Emirates bar at New Reception location in Ongwediva and stole money from four jackpot machines after they vandalised them.

Police say the incident occurred around 00h00 this morning. Nampol Spokesperson Inspector Thomas Aiyambo says the four unknown suspects were armed with one pistol, a pang and a crowbar.

“They attacked customers and the security guard. They ordered them to lay on the floor, held the security guard and took his shotgun. They then assaulted him, prompting one customer to come to his rescue and also being assaulted in the process. The security officer and customer sustained injuries, as they were both bleeding on their heads. The robbers, on top of stealing the money and breaking the machines, also took the security guard’s shotgun,” Aiyambo said.

The suspects are said to have fled the crime scene in a white Toyota Corolla, of which the number plate was not identified.

The 23-year-old bar lady, the security guard, aged 37, and the injured 30-year-old customer have since opened a robbery with aggravating circumstances case.

The victims were taken to Oshakati state hospital for medical attention.

No recovery has been made as of yet, and police investigations continue.

Meanwhile, a case of rape has been opened at Oshakati after a 37-year-old man raped a 24-year-old woman earlier this week.

Aiyambo says the victim and the suspect met at Game shopping centre during the day and exchanged contact numbers.

“Around 21: 00, the suspect called the victim to meet up at Ekuku, Oshakati and ordered her to get into his vehicle in the back seat. He started kissing her and inappropriately touching her, and she attempted to open the door, but it was locked. He then he pushed her on her back, and she fell on the seat and raped her,” he said.

The suspect will appear in court tomorrow, although the incident reportedly happened on Sunday. The matter was only reported to the police on Tuesday, Aiyambo added.

The suspect is from Ehenye.
