Namibia has congratulated Queen Elizabeth on her platinum jubilee in commemoration of her 70-year reign.
The 96-year-old monarch became the first British monarch ever to make it to the Platinum Jubilee.
A platinum jubilee is a celebration held to mark an anniversary. Among monarchies, it usually refers to the 70th anniversary.
Queen Elizabeth, in September 2015, broke the record of the longest-reigning British monarch when she overtook Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years 216 days.
“This truly calls for a celebration, and the Namibia people, on this very special occasion, will join other Commonwealth Countries in wishing Her Majesty the Queen many more happy returns as she continues to steer our organisation, the Commonwealth, to greater heights. As head of the Commonwealth for the last 70 years, Her Majesty the Queen has worked tirelessly to promote unity and partnerships amongst Commonwealth member States, for which we continue to admire her,” said the deputy international relations minister, Jenelly Matundu, at the occasion of the Queen’s platinum jubilee on Thursday.
She said it was pleasing that Namibia and the United Kingdom enjoy excellent bilateral relations.
“Various development cooperation programmes are supported by the Department of International Development (DFID) and the British Council. We have no doubt that with our mutually beneficial friendship and ongoing cooperation in various fields, our two countries will be able to achieve the desired Economic Development Goals.”
Queen Elizabeth II began her reign on 6 February 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI, after a long illness.
