The nation is reeling in shock after police discovered the remains of a man this morning in a purported suicide.

The man is said to have been the driver of a pickup Bakkie that bumped into four pedestrians last night, killing them instantly.

Oshana police say family members of the four people who were fatally bumped by the pickup Bakkie last night have yet to be informed. Three women and a man are said to have died on the spot, while a fifth person is also receiving medical treatment.

Acting Oshana regional commander deputy commissioner Moses Kashala confirmed in an interview with The Villager that the driver of the pickup Bakkie has since committed suicide. His body was retrieved this morning behind Woermann Brock in Oshakati. Kashala described the accident as tragic.

It is reported that the driver of the Bakkie fled the accident scene. The accident occurred around 23:00 on Maria Nakuumba Road near Okatana, in Okahao. Allegations are that the driver failed to control the car after bumping into the Okatana traffic lights, ramming into the five pedestrians. Warrant Frieda Shikole said the Bakkie was driving from Uupindi, with four passengers receiving medical attention after the accident.

The Bakkie is said to have sustained serious damages on the right side.

“Our investigations are still at an early stage; therefore, we cannot divulge more details regarding this accident because some of the deceased’s family members have not been informed until now. It is therefore insensitive to talk about the accident at this stage. All I can do is confirm that it happened,” Kashala said.
