What was supposed to be a happy and joyous moment for a 30-year-old man last Thursday after scoring a jackpot win ended in a bloody and fatal incident after he was attacked by a 40-year-old man with a steel bar.

Police say the victim yesterday succumbed to injuries he sustained last Thursday at Omahenene Cuca Shop, Omuthiya.

Oshikoto Regional Commander Commissioner Teopoline Kalompo-Nashikaku said that the fatal assault occurred around 20:30 last Thursday.

“The deceased was playing a jackpot machine inside the bar, and the suspect approached the deceased just after his payout. In the process, an argument erupted between the two. The suspect pulled the deceased outside the bar, ran into his car, picked up a round steel tube, and beat the deceased once in the forehead; the deceased fainted. He was taken to Omuthiya State Hospital on the same day and transferred to ICU at Oshakati State Hospital,” Nashikaku said.

Yesterday, the deceased passed away around 15H00 at Oshakati State Hospital. His next of kin are yet to be informed. He is said to be from Oshinyadhila village in the Oshana region.

The 40-year-old suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear in Ondangwa magistrates court on a charge of murder.

“The Postmortem will be conducted at Oshakati Police mortuary to determine the cause of death,” Nashikaku added.

Meanwhile, a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at Tsumeb after the victim went drinking with his younger brother at Omzanzi lounge and decided to go home after they finished.

“His brother was upfront when he met an unknown lady and decided to great. While talking to the lady, one guy who the victim does not know approached him, having a beer in his hand and asked the victim why he was talking to the lady. The victim tried to explain, but this guy hit the victim with a beer bottle on the left side of the head. The victim ran away, and a group of people chased him. One kicked him on the leg coursing him to fall,” Nashikaku said. The incident occurred on Friday.

“The group started beating the victim. In that group, the victim saw the same guy who beat him with a bottle holding a knife in his hand and started stabbing him in both arms and the chest. The victim managed to escape and run away up to Nomtsoub police station where he was taken to Tsumeb state hospital for treatment,” Nashikaku added.
