NBC workers claim that the senior leadership team weaponised them to induce government into bailing the corporation by threatening to reduce staff from 569 to 413 in September 2019.In a letter seen by Eagle FM, the workers said the threat by management showed that they do not care about the concerns of the workers because they used them to manipulate the government into complying with demands.
“Nevertheless, the shareholder responded positively to the call by the NBC to sufficiently fund the broadcaster by increasing its subsidy from N$237 million in 2014/2015 to N$140 million in 2019/2020 with a substantial increase in 2020 of N$300 million.
“As employees, we welcomed Government meeting the NBC halfway, in order to carry out our duties a part of our public service duty to the nation. We were hopeful that such a helpful figure would be used efficiently to reduce financial depression in the company. But, this cash injection only served to exacerbate the mismanagement of funds,” the workers said.
