In an open letter seen by Eagle FM, the workers said they can no longer remain silent in the wake of the latest fall out between management and employees as a result of executive performance bonus payout that is already front-page news.
“This letter, borne out of love for this company, for our commitment to serving this nation and the lifelong commitment we have made to the truth, is more than anything, a cry for help from the
workers to the nation and the relevant authorities,” they wrote.
They further said that the core premise of their very existence is to keep the nation informed and they have done so diligently in all other matters except one which affects them directly for fear of victimization or worse, fear of losing jobs.
“The concerned workers of the NBC can no longer allow the abuses we face under this management which includes unfair remuneration practices, and selfish squandering of taxpayers’ money.
“As the recent roof leaking saga demonstrates, we cannot perform our public service duty to the nation to optimally & consistently because monies meant for the NBC’s healthy management are being used for selfish profiteering,” the workers said.
They admit that NBC has for over the past 5 years and even longer experienced major financial challenges brought about by the insufficient funding by the Shareholder, which is the Government of the Republic of Namibia.
As a result, the workers stated, the NBC Board under the leadership of Sven Thieme and the Senior Leadership Team introduced Austerity measures in September 2019.
They reducing broadcast hours on both Radio & TV; discontinued the live broadcast of parliamentary proceedings; abolished NBC 3, 4 and 6; and abandoned various local programming and acquisition of international content.
