The health ministry has directed all health regional directors and chief executive officers of local authorities to recall canned products comprising KOO canned vegetable products, Hugo’s baked beans and Helderberg Peas.
This is contained in a letter dated August the 3rd 2021, seen by Eagle FM.
The ministry is targeting products produced specifically between the 1st of May 2019 and the 5th of May 2021.
Eagle FM is informed that the product recall commenced in South Africa towards the end of last month and the reason being that there are safety concerns due to potentially defective cans.
The ministry’s Ben Nangombe has said the recall does not include all KOO canned fruit products, KOO Pilchards and other KOO products packaged in glass.
Koo on its website has said Canned vegetable products forming part of the recall can be identified by looking at the manufacturing date code stamped on the bottom or top of the can.
Koo has also said no health issues have been reported to date relating to the affected product range.
” Although there is a low probability of illness and injury, matters of quality and food safety are an absolute priority for Tiger Brands,” the company says.
