The Swapo Party has started preparing for the upcoming regional and local councils elections by calling on the regions and districts to identify aspiring candidates.
In a notice dated 6 August 2020, Swapo secretary-general Sophia Shanigwa ordered all regional coordinators except those from Rundu Urban and Otjozondjupa region to start with the process of identifying constituency councillors.
Each region should nominate four aspiring constituency councillors and submit names to the Office of the Secretary-General.
Shanigwa said the names should be accompanied by clean certified copies of Swapo Party membership card that shows that the candidate has been a member for five years; proof of payment of annual fees and one per cent contribution, Namibian ID, voters card and CV.
Initially, Shaningwa had sent out a circular that said 10 years but in an interview with Eagle FM, she said they had misread the party papers which say it should be five years.
The Swapo Party Youth League secretary Ephraim Nekongo said the move would allow the youth to go through grooming before they can assume any leadership positions within the party.
