Speaking at a SWAPO rally in Okahandja, Shali used the phrase “cutting their throats” in reference to former Swapo members who are now leading opposition political parties.
Lawyer Kadhila Amoomo demanded that Martin Shali should apologise in public and withdraw his remarks made on Saturday at a political rally.
The lawyers, under instructions from the Affirmative Repositioning, wrote to the former general.
The lawyers also highlighted that Shali has until 9 November to submit to the demands. In a statement, Shali said his words were taken out of context, and that the phrase he used was apparently a form of figurative speech in an African language.
“I use figurative speech to defeating politically our opponents at the ballot box by ‘cutting off their heads’,” Shali said.
Popular Democratic Movement has opened a case against Shali for the remarks.
PDM said that this amounts to intimidation, causes instability and violates the Namibian constitution.
Jennifer van den Heever, vice president of PDM, opened the case at the Windhoek Central Police Station earlier today.
