The government says the education sector will with immediate effect launch programmes that will equip pupils with appropriate skills and knowledge as well as attitudes regarding gender-based violence.
This was said by Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila in the National Assembly Tuesday when she responded to a petition handed over to the justice minister Yvonne Dausab last week Thursday by protesters.
The youthful protesters took Windhoek by storm on Thursday demanding action from the government.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said a circular reinforcing safe schools’ framework will be drawn up under the auspices of the education ministry.
She also said a communications strategy and advocacy will be developed to strengthen all existing measures and programmes.
In addition, there will be multi-media press conferences and knowledge fair to showcase all strategies.
Furthermore, summative reports on the re-enforced response strategies will be released periodically.
Regarding the release of any teacher in employment with sexual relationships with learners, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said, a policy in is already in place, and it is being implemented.
“Those expelled on this offence are barred from re-employment for at least 8 years,” she said.
According to the PM, the institutions of higher learning also adopted similar measures to curb such unethical conduct, as part of the code of conducts, public and private high education institutions have codes of conduct to deal with the issue.
