Police, protestors’ altercation regrettable – PM

Prime Minister Saara Kuugogelwa-Amadhila says Saturday’s altercation between the police and some protestors is regrettable.
In a statement Saturday, the PM said the police are there to protect people.
The statement was issued after the police had detained without charge journalists covering the event in the capital.
The protest that went into the third day was organized by the youth who are demanding that the police should act swiftly on GBV cases.
They also want President Hage Geingob to declare a state of emergency on GBV.
On Wednesday, the youth handed over a petition to the justice minister and yesterday they handed over another one to the gender ministry.
The PM said the government will provide feedback on Tuesday after a Cabinet meeting on the petition given to it by protesters on Thursday. The protesters, most of them young university students, called for stricter punishment for sex offenders and protection from the police against gender-based violence
