Sakeus Taanyanda Enkono, 7, from Iishanaputa Village in Outapi Constituency in Omusati region died after drowning in a water canal while trying to swim.
According to commissioner Titus Shikongo, the incident happened last week in the NamWater water canal, at Okafakoushongo Village, Outapi Constituency.
Commissioner Shikongo also said three children of the same age were playing on the edge of the water canal on their way from school when Sakeus slid into the water and drowned.
Shikongo further indicated that the other two notified a teacher who was passing by, who in turn notified the police.
The body could not be retrieved immediately due to strong water current and the depth of the canal at the spot, the commissioner said.
The body was only retrieved on Saturday 17 October 2020 at about 08h45 with the assistance of police divers from Oshana region.
The deceased next of kin have been informed.
The body was taken to Okahao Police Mortuary pending postmortem.
Police investigations are underway.
